The "Double-Up" Breast Pump

THE PUMP
Keep the pump dry. Do not use the pump while you are in water. Always use the overflow filter. If it seems like there isn't enough suction, read the overflow filter information and check to make sure all the tubes are connected tightly and that the gaskets are in place.

THE LONG AND SHORT TUBES
The long tube goes between the pump and the blue side of the overflow filter. Mist may condense on the inside of the long tube. This will not harm the pump. Disconnecting the long tube from the pump when you are through pumping will help it to dry it.

The short piece of tubing is used to connect the kits together for double pumping. If drops of water condense in the short tube shake the water.

THE OVERFLOW FILTER
The purpose of the overflow filter is to keep milk out of the pump. Do not wash or boil the overflow filter. There may be drops of water in the overflow filter after using the pump. This is normal. You may shake the water out. Avoid getting milk in the overflow filter. Mold may grow in the filter if there is milk in it. Milk can cause the filter to clog quickly. If it seems that the pump has less suction, try using a new filter. There is a spare filter provided with your pump. Keep your spare filter handy. Contact the place you purchased the pump to purchase additional filters.

THE COLLECTION KIT
Before using the collection kit for the first time we recommend that you boil the flanges and bottles (only). Place the flanges and bottles in rapidly boiling water for three minutes. Remove carefully with tongs or something similar. Lay on paper towels to air dry. (DO NOT BOIL THE OVERFLOW FILTERS OR GASKETS!) After boiling this one time you only need to wash the bottles, flanges, gaskets and adapter caps in warm soapy water, rinse well and air dry after each use. We do not recommend drying in the dishwasher or microwave. You should check with your doctor to see if sterilizing is necessary in the area where you live or if you are traveling out of the country.

Many other 4 ounce bottles can be used with the pump. Use only bottles made of rigid material, such as glass or hard plastic. Do not use plastic bottle bags with the Double-Up Breast Pump. The gasket must be in place between the bottle and flange or the pump will not have enough suction. There are three adapter caps included with your Double-Up Breast Pump. One shows an imprint of one collection kit and the other two show an imprint of two collection kits. Use one for single pumping and two for double pumping.

SINGLE BREAST PUMPING
1) Wash your hands and make sure that any part of the collection kit which touches your breast or your milk is clean. Do not wash the overflow filter. You do not need to wash the long tube.

2) Place the gasket (blue rubber ring) in the screw portion of the flange and screw the bottle on. We suggest running your finger around the surface of the gasket to make sure it is lying flat. Then screw the bottle on so it is snug but not so tight that the gasket bunches up. Press the single adapter cap firmly on to the flange.

3) Insert the clear side of the overflow filter into one of the holes in the adapter cap. Now connect the fitted end of the long tube into the blue side of the filter. Connect the other end of the long tube to the blue post on the side of the pump. Plug the pump in and turn it to a setting in the single kit range.

4) Place the flange over your breast and center your nipple in the opening. Make suction by placing your finger or thumb over the small hole in the adapter cap. You should release suction by lifting your finger every 2 to 3 seconds. You can adjust the control knob within the single kit range to whatever is comfortable and effective for you. When your milk flow slows or stops, change sides. Switching from one breast to the other every few minutes will bring more milk.

5) You can also pump one side and nurse the baby on the other. This way you can take advantage of the milk letting down when your baby nurses.

WARNING: If pumping is painful for you, stop pumping. Do not use The Double-Up Breast Pump if you are unable to express milk with it. If your nipples experience swelling or discoloration, do not continue pumping. Contact a Lactation Consultant or healthcare professional.

DOUBLE BREAST PUMPING
Pumping both breasts at once cuts pumping time in half and can help keep your milk production up if you are separated from your baby. To maintain your milk supply, you should pump at least every three hours that you are separated from your baby.

1) Wash your hands and make sure that any part of the collection kits which touch your breast or your milk is clean. Do not wash the overflow filter. You do not need to wash the tubing.

2) Press a double adapter cap firmly over each flange. Connect one end of the short tube to each double adapter cap. Press the clear side of the filter firmly into the remaining hole in one of the caps and connect the fitted end of the long tube into the blue side of the filter. Now you can control the suction for both kits with the hole on the second kit. Connect the other end of the long tube to the blue post on the side of the pump.

3) Place a flange over each breast and center your nipples in the openings. Make suction by placing a finger or thumb over the open hole in one cap. You should release suction by lifting or rolling your finger every 2-3 seconds. You can adjust the control knob to whatever setting is comfortable and effective for you.

Warning: If pumping is painful for you, stop pumping. Do not use the Double-Up Pump if you are unable to express milk with it. If your nipples experience swelling or discoloration, do not continue pumping. Contact a Lactation Consultant or health-care professional.

TO STORE AND USE MILK
After pumping, seal, label and date the bottle or special milk storage bag. Now place it in the refrigerator or the bottom portion of your Pump n' Cooler Tote with the pre-frozen Blue Ice. It is okay if the Blue Ice has been in your Pump n' Cooler Tote for a few hours since it was taken out of the freezer.

Cool each collection separately. Never pour warm milk onto cool or frozen milk. It is all right to pour two or more bottles of cooled milk together before freezing. Cooled fresh milk can be added to frozen if the amount is less than the frozen amount of milk.

Refrigerated milk will keep up to 5 days, if stored in the back and coolest part of the refrigerator; otherwise, it will keep 2-3 days. It will keep 2 weeks in the freezer compartment located inside the refrigerator door. If the refrigerator has a freezer with a separate outside door, milk will keep up to 3 to 4 months if stored in the back part of the freezer.

To Thaw: Check dates and use the oldest milk first. Thaw the milk under cool, and then warm, running water. Swirl occasionally. Do not be alarmed if the milk separates or "layers" - this is normal since breastmilk is not homogenized.

WHAT HAPPENS IF...?

THERE DOESN'T SEEM TO BE ENOUGH SUCTION
Make sure that the gasket between the flange and the bottle is flat, not bunched up. The tubing must be connected tightly and the caps firmly in place. If the filter is blocking suction it should be replaced. There is a spare filter provided with your Double-Up Breast Pump kit. Contact the place you purchased your pump for additional filters.

YOU AREN'T GETTING AS MUCH MILK WITH YOUR PUMP AS YOU NEED
Don't expect much from the first attempts. Many women do not get more than a few drops or teaspoons. If you express more consider it a bonus. Start by pumping for 5 minutes. Increasing pumping through daily sessions soon yields more results as your body gets used to the pump.

Are you pumping often enough? You should pump at least every three hours that you are separated from your baby if you wish to supply your baby with breast milk. Giving your baby formula and solid food will cause your baby to nurse less, and you will make less milk. You can increase your milk production by pumping more, by breastfeeding more, or by breastfeeding and pumping at the same time.

THERE IS MIST OR DROPS OF WATER IN THE TUBING
Shake the tubing hard to get the water out. This small amount of water will not harm the pump. Leave the tubing disconnected when you are not using the pump.

THERE IS MILK IN THE TUBING
Make sure not to overfill the bottles. Do not use plastic liner bags with the pump. Make sure that the gaskets between the flanges and bottles are properly placed. We advise boiling the short tube if milk gets into it. See intructions on "filter". If milk gets into your short tubing boil it for 4 minutes in rapid boiling water to clean it (if you leave it in any longer it will melt!) As long as you use your overflow filter milk cannot get into your long tube.

THE PUMP IS MAKING A LOUD NOISE
Change the filter. See intructions on "filter".
