We are most grateful to our family and friends for their love and support in helping to make this project a reality.

If indeed a picture is worth a thousand words, imagine the impact of a thousand pictures.

What you are about to see are several hundred breastfeeding pictures, valued in words too numerous to count. These images circumvent the need for language, because breastfeeding is truly a universal language.

The history of breastfeeding mirrors the history of womankind. This unique collection of images dates from prehistoric periods to contemporary times. It includes paintings, photographs, and rare artifacts. It is by no means complete, but with your help, it can grow.

If you would like to participate in this historical library, please send us your breastfeeding images. Each entry must include background information including original source data and copyright information. Individuals worldwide are encouraged to participate. The broader the level of participation, the better the collection will be. All types of images are requested; professional as well as personal. It is our intent to enlighten as well as entertain, so don’t hesitate to share some of those never before seen images of you and your children.

This library will enable visitors to get a glimpse of breastfeeding—past and present—the challenges that were unique to each generation of women—and the enduring bond that breastfeeding creates between a mother and her child.

Each image represents a piece of reality captured over time. What we hope to convey to our visitors is the reality that breastfeeding is normal, because without that realization, the health and security of our world is in doubt.

We invite parents and health professionals to join us in our efforts to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding by sharing your images. Truly a picture is worth a thousand words. Please assist us in creating a picture for the future that we can all cherish.
